TASTING NOTES

The first Black label Pinotage was the 1997 vintage and although this wine have a good following we have started to make less and less of it. We will also release a reserve wine out of this batch this vintage. The grapes for this wine are from a very low yielding old bush vine block planted in the middle 90’s. We get on average around 25 hl per hectare and therefore stock is getting less and less. The grapes on Laibach are all farmed organically and without irrigation in the old vines.

Grapes are handpicked in the early mornings. Destemming is followed by sorting on modern vibrating tables before a little crushing. We allow 15% whole bunches for a different flavour profile and to add some spice. 2 – 3 Cold soak days before a warm and quick fermentation with a selected yeast. Temperatures are allowed to peak around 28 degrees Celsius. Manual punch downs are used often in the beginning to extract tannin and color but we work more carefully at the end. Total time on skins will be around 6 – 7 days before pressing. Press juice is immediately added and the wine is inoculated for Malolactic which happens in stainless. After this secondary fermentation the wine is sulfured and aged in 100% French oak Francois Freres barrels from Burgundy. For this wine we have not used any new oak.

Deep, incredible dark red color. Aromas of wild spice, fynbos and cranberry. Medium bodied with good freshness and an array of complexed clean flavours. The expensive wood is well integrated and the wine has a lingering soft velvety finish. Still very much primary but with enough structure to last 5 – 8 years.
