We proudly present the 3rd vintage of this rather new and very scare Organic
Chenin. This wine is an estate wine for us and made from the oldest Chenin
vineyard on the farm. Like you all know we are farming everything organically since
the early 2000’s and that we are seen as one of the trailblazers in South – Africa.
Our winemaking also pushes the boundaries to the complete extremes and that is
why we can produce, this unique wine, on our fantastic Simonsberg – Stellenbosch
The 2019 vintage in Stellenbosch and very much all wine growing areas were not
easy. We came out of 3 years of less than average rain and the weaker “terroirs”
were suffering. Plants really struggled and in many cases did not have enough
reserves to ripen the grapes properly. Luckily our stand out clay soils were a bit
more buffered. Deep clay soils are not only much cooler but also have a much
better water retention. Therefore the plants don’t go in stress mode so quickly.
We pick everything by hand and decided with this vintage to also pick some grapes
really early to keep the natural acidity. We do some very strange winemaking for
this wine. Let me just say we treat white like red and do very much everything that is
not allowed in SA winemaking. No sulfur, yeast, enzymes or any other funky
commercial products. Just grapes. The finished wine is matured for 11 months in a
combination of “egg shaped” raw concrete and older larger oak French and
Hungarian oak barrels.
Not your typical colour. Not an orange wine at all. A almost a bit olive like. A crazy
funky nose with lots of pineapple and tropical tones. Some white peach and golden
delicious also quite pronounced. The palate is exploding with fruit oodles of tropical
aromas. The acidity is beautiful balanced and the wine has a lovely lingering
aftertaste. A wine to be enjoyed on its own or to match and array of dishes. Drink
2020 till 2025.
