A new release of an old stalwart. Ladybird white was the first organic white wine we produced. It is a wine always punching far above its weight and the 2018 is no exception. A regular 4.5 stars Platter wine, this vintage consists again mostly of Chardonnay with a splash (15%) of Chenin Blanc.
Grapes are all whole bunch pressed and come from low yielding Organic vineyards. Mostly clay soils which are high in organic material and give fatness to the final wine. The winemaking is quite simple. Everything they teach you in modern winemaking we just ignore and do exactly the opposite. After whole bunch pressing we do natural settling with no enzymes and also no fining agents. Fermentation is done 100% wild, warm, quick and with no real Sulphur. We use 50% old 500 liter barrels, 25% Concrete Nomblot eggs and 25% stainless steel. We leave the finished wine on the sediment for eleven months with no further Sulphur additions. Some years Malolactic happens and some years not. The wine is racked early January, blended and then bottled with a filtration.
Beautiful light straw color. Complex nose with some toffee, hay and white peach. Medium bodied palate with a rich creamy texture and some minerals. The wood is very well integrated with great balance, complemented with an almost creamy acidity. A wine to complement food but with enough excitement and freshness to drink on its own. Drink 1 – 4 years after harvest.
